Projects / Pond Restoration in Mile End Park

Pond Restoration in Mile End Park

The aim of this project is to restore a concrete sterile standing water and terrestrial habitat within the park. Due to lack of suitable material, vegetation cannot grow on the sides of the pond. Therefore the water body has no wildlife or vegetation and is unsuitable for wildlife and people. So the pond will be fitted with coir rolls bolted onto the concrete sides all the way around. The pond will be managed to maximise its biodiversity potential. Volunteers will be planting wildflower plugs around the pond increasing the surrounding terrestrial habitat. Various hibernacula will be made to improve areas where animals can hibernate, forage and offer protection. This will greatly increase biodiversity within this park by providing water and foraging site for all wildlife. Froglife will support the project with on-site supervision and follow up advice, training on surveys and maintenance for the local community.
