Porters Row – Conserving the Cottages

Essential repair and conservation work will be carried out on four original dock – workers’ cottages (Grade 11 listed within the 210 year old historic dock complex at the National Waterways Museum Ellesmere Port. Twelve houses were built to house the growing number of people working in the docks. Only four of these remain – no. 9 – 12. In 1986 they were restored and furnished to show life in the docks in the 1840s (no. 9), 1900s (no. 10) and the 1950s (no. 12).
Porters Row is one of the most visited parts of the museum and over the last twenty years, the exterior and interior of the cottages have been weathered and worn. The project will enable completion of a programme of essential works including:
Replacement of cottage front doors
Repair and replacement of windows
Rebuilding the scullery area of no. 10
Rebuilding the fireplace in no. 12
Repair garage roof
Exterior and interior painting

The work will follow conservation guidance drawn up after detailed historical research in the 1980s.
