Projects / Portmore Lough reed bed reinstatement

Portmore Lough reed bed reinstatement

This project will remove 8.7 ha scrub at RSPB’s reserve at Portmore Lough leaving the area suitable for reed colonisation. This will provide an open transition from Lough to fen to meadow, creating an incredible array of biodiversity and completely transforming the reserve. The reed bed will be managed for a number of priority species including bittern, reed warbler and marsh harrier. The removal of the scrub will create an open vista adjacent to the wet grassland area which would be important for breeding waders as they allow greater protection against predators.
