Preserving the Port

The Boat Museum’s Grade 2 listed 21 metre brick chimney is a landmark for the museum site and the surrounding area. Opened in 1873, the innovative hydraulic system to drive around 20 cranes and 20 capstans which moved cargoes, wagons and boats around the docks.
The chimney will undergo an urgent programme of conservation work to restore lost brickwork and to protect the listed structure from further weathering.
Interpretation panels will be installed to promote this 133 year old structure to 30,000 plus visitors each year.
