Protecting Pennine Peregrines

Wildlife crime is a global issue (illegal trafficing of animals and plants is a multi-billion industry). Forensic genetic analysis now aids criminal investigations through identification of species, populations and individuals. Implementing DNA databases conserves biodiversity through sustained reduction in the number of incidents. In 1986, the first known local breeding of Peregrines took place at Rishworth Moor. Dispite 3 or 4 pairs now breeding at this locality they are far from secure. Only vigilance and prompt action in the face of suspicious activities prevents stolen chicks being laundered into the ‘captive bred’ falcon trade. LCF funding will support a DNA sampling programme.
