Radyr Weir, Cardiff – Taff Trail Riverside Amenity

Radyr Weir, located on the northern outskirts of Cardiff, spans the breadth of the River Taff at a height of 3.5 meters. It was built in 1774 to divert water into a leat to the Melingriffith Tin Plate Works. The Taff Trail, a popular 56 mile route (from Brecon to Cardiff Bay) for cyclists, walkers and horse riders, borders the river on its journey to the sea.
This project will create a recreational space for users of the Taff Trail; the amenity will also attract visitors who want to view the recently completed Radyr Weir Hydro Electric facility, a renewable energy scheme that utilises the topography of the Weir.
The project will redirect and upgrade the Taff Trail along a 140 metre juncture and it will also provide new fencing along the riverbank, picnic tables, benches, landscaping, cycle stands and Interpretation Boards. The project site abuts the new Hydro Electric facility; it will enhance the visitor and user experience whilst improving the aesthetic qualities of the area.
