Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve – Access for All

Provision of high quality all weather paths, construction of a new bird hide, and marked trails with interpretation features around the whole Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve to enable access for all members of the community. This is part of a wider objective to increase numbers of people of all abilities visiting the reserve and engaging with nature. The reserve was established in 1996 when the paths where constructed from colliery shale and red ash, which retains water, has eroded badly, and requires constant repairs especially following bad weather. Much of the path network is now unsuitable for many members of the public. We also plan to improve the visitor experience with nature trail markers, interpretation boards a series of guided walks to relaunch the new improved trails. The bird hide will be an architect designed multi functional building, and provide valuable close up wildlife viewing facilities as well as outdoor classroom / meeting space for groups.
