Red Squirrel Conservation in the Ring Of Gullion

Red Squirrel conservation - protecting the red squirrel through increased public awareness and education, undertaking surveying and monitoring of populations and implementing a conservation strategy focused around the Ring of Gullion’s core red squirrel populations in Slieve Gullion Forest, Camlough Wood and Glendesha Wood. We would • Conduct systematic squirrel population research • Implement grey squirrel control measures • Provide red squirrel feeder boxes when needed • Supplementary feeding using grey-proof hoppers will be useful in situations when mature seed bearing conifers are in short supply. • Train volunteers to survey for red squirrels, to clean and replenish the feeding stations, report methods for grey squirrels, to spot a case of pox virus and all leave no trace principles. • Facilitate public understanding of red squirrels • Encourage public use of the woods
