Relocation and Restoration of the Dalkeith Burns Monument

The Burns Monument is a historic cast iron fountain installed in 1899. The fountain the scene of many historic events in the town and was famed as a local meeting point. In the 1960’s the fountain was decommissioned and its lamp, pedestal and cherub were lost. The fountain was moved to a garden within a local park where it sat unrecognised. In 2003 it was moved from the park to Buccleuch Street, Dalkeith. In recent years it has suffered from rust and structural cracking. In 2013 members of the public launched a campaign to restore and relocate the Burns Monument in High Street. The aim is to restore the structure for the benefit of future generations, engage the local community in history and heritage and provide the town centre of Dalkeith with an iconic historic structure which is instantly recognisable and strengthens the sense of identity of the town. The reinstatement of the pedestal and fountain (based on existing structures from the same foundry) will aid the understanding of the structure.
