Renovating Hall

Hammerwich Womens Institute (HWI) own the primarily wooden constructed single storey building located in Burntwood, Staffordshire. Established 105 years ago the building offers users a large main hall, with an entrance hall, storage room, a smaller meeting room and two toilets. At the rear of the building there is brick extension with a flat roof that houses a kitchen and toilet. Five weekly groups include fitness, wargames, dance, crafts and sewing, all ran independently of the HWI. Monthly users include the Townswomens’ Guild, HWI and the parish council. The building is available for private one off events and parties. The existing pitched felt roof and flat roof above the kitchen are old, cracked and worn. Storms and wind damage earlier in the year led to roof repairs, which is when damp was found in the roof space. Biffa Award has been approached to fund the stripping of the existing system and to install a fleece-backed, single ply roofing system, to include all edge trims to the existing fascia boards on the main hall roof and kitchen. The HWI is unique in having its own property and relies on booking from the local community to keep it maintained. Hammerwich also has a well-used community centre and a cricket club that hosts a range of evening social events, as well as offering a spacious function room and a smaller room for private events.
