Replace floor and redecorate internally

The 2nd Marlborough Scout Group (MSG) is located in Marlborough, Wiltshire. The hall was constructed in 1974, is of wooden construction with a pitched bitumen roof and is fully accessible. Internally, the building has a large hall, small meeting room, six storage rooms, a small basic kitchen and toilets. There is limited parking and a secure outside area for activities.

In addition to scouting groups, who use the space four evenings each week, the premises are frequented by several wider groups including MAD dance school, Age UK Friendship, line dancing, Tai Chi, U3A Art and Bridge. The building is also used for annual events including a bonfire night.

The floorboards in the main hall are original and have been sanded and resealed extensively over the years. An independent surveyors report completed in February 2025 confirms that there are no structural defects to the underside of the floor or its supporting timbers. However, the report does confirm that although the floorboards appeared to be in a reasonable condition, they are towards the limit of further sanding and sealing.

Floorboards are lifting from the joists, and fixings are self-extracting which is causing injuries to users; scout leaders now have to inspect the hall floor prior to each session and hammer any raised nails back into the joists. Additionally, some areas of the floor have gaps where they are no longer sealed and this creates a draft.

To improve safety and user experience, Biffa Award has been approached to fully fund replacing the floor, to include the replacement of skirting board, architraves and redecoration.
