Rescuing our Reds – Barrasford Quarry Area

This project is part of a wider programme of targeted practical conservation measures to protect the UK’s native red squirrel. The grey squirrel is significantly connected to the decline of the red squirrel and without control action it is anticipated that the red squirrel could be extinct in the UK by 2025. This project is for the targeted, systematic trapping of grey squirrels in two woodlands (Great Swinburne woods and Barrasford Quarry woodlands) within the roaming radius of red squirrel populations in the vicinity of Barrasford Quarry. Research suggests that red squirrels usually travel 2-3km within their home range but can travel up to 16km. Each woodland will be trapped for a four to five weeks in total and all grey squirrel control will confirm to the recommendations of Forestry Commission Best Practice Note 4. Staff and volunteers have been trained to work at the highest animal welfare standards and the impact of the trapping will be monitored for returning populations / recolonisation.
