Restoration and Enhancement of species-rich chalk grassland at Brockham Limeworks

To permanently fence a significant area of the quarry floor and lower slopes to enable sheep grazing over a larger area than is currently subject to grazing. This will enable the restoration and maintenance of species-rich chalk grassland, a valuable and increasingly rare habitat on the North Downs. This habitat was once widespread, but now only survives on the steeper and less accessible slopes, of which this quarry is a good example. Sheep grazing was the traditional management technique that created this habitat type and without it the grassland quickly reverts to scrub and woodland.
