Restoration and reuse of the Seamen’s Chapel, Candle Lane, Dundee

Virtually every large port had a Seamen’s Chapel. They were non-denominational and designed to help give sailors support and comfort. They are now a very rare building type, the one in Dundee is almost certainly the only one left in Scotland. It is now derelict and is classed on the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland as being severely at risk. Tayside Building Preservation Trust with the assistance of Dundee City Council and a section 75 agreement under the 1997 Planning Act, has a means to acquire the building and intend to purchase with a view to restoring the structure and using it as a conservation centre which will provide a base for the various amenity bodies which exist across the City.
