Projects / Restoration of Cathays Chapels

Restoration of Cathays Chapels

Cathays Chapels are Grade II listed buildings within Cathays Cemetery, one of the largest Victorian Cemeteries in the UK. The chapels are an excellent example of Victorian Municipal Style cemetery chapels in gothic style, however there are currently closed as unsafe to use and in dire need of restoration. The site is visited by many, both as a place of remembrance as well as heritage. There are regular walks and talks on site as well as a very vibrant ‘Friends of Cathays Cemetery’ Group. It is proposed to restore one of the chapels at Cathays Cemetery so that it can once again be used by the public and act as a base for the ‘Friends’ group. The proposed works would include: the restoration of the public doors (including installation of ramp for disabled users), restoration of the wooden suspended floors, the replacement of gas heating system and lighting, replacement of the missing windows (currently no windows at all) and installation of a new public seating area.
