Restoration of Colliery Mission Baners, Whitehaven

Not a huge amount of information is readily available about the Colliery Mission as records have been lost over the years. The mission arose as a result of miners who identified that there was a need by the people they worked with to provide some sort of spiritual guidance and moral direction. The mission began in 1900 and had a fairly rapid rise in popularity. Many banners were made depicting various moral messages and in Whitehaven there are 14 which require restoration in order to preserve them for generations to come. These banners are part of the history and heritage of Whitehaven and because of the number available are possibly unique, not only in Whitehaven but in coalfield area of England.

Whilst the banner restoration would not be something CWMET could support, supporting the mission to build a fixed cabinet in which to house the banners would be. It is that elemet on which this application is based.
