RESTORATION OF HMS ALLIANCE

HMS Alliance is the official memorial to the 5,300 submariners who have given their lives in the course of duty. 12,500 submariners served in World War II on similar boats, and their skill and bravery helped to achieve a turning point in the War, at a time when one in three of this type of submarine was lost in combat with all hands.
She is the only surviving British World War II submarine preserved in the UK, and the only such vessel open to visitors. Most of the Museum’s 47,500 visitors opt to receive a timed ticket for a conducted tour of HMS Alliance.

Supported on concrete cradles over the sea by the Museum quayside, exposure to seawater is continuing to cause corrosion to her bow, stern, faring plates and keel. Gaping holes, caused by aggressive rust over the past 25 years, have opened up a habitat for birds, especially pigeons. Although the pressure hull itself is safe, the Conservation & Access Project is urgently required to prevent further severe decay before it is too late.
