Restoration of Important Early 17th Century Stained Glass

The original Chapel at Abbot’s Hospital features 2 large windows datemarked 1621 containing elaborate stained glass believed to be the work of Flemish brothers, Abraham and Bernard Van Linge. These are of considerable art history significance and demonstrate both kiln fired glass and painted enamelled glass. The glass shows scenes from the story of Jacob and Esau and would have designed for the Chapel. A condition survey concluded in March 2012 concluded that panels demonstrating structural defects should be repaired without delay. Work to include repair of cracked pieces, application of protective backing glass to repaired sections, in-fill of missing areas with painted and kiln fired glass to match original and releading of damaged sections. Traditional conservation techniques to be used. A photographic record in digital format to be made before, during and after works. A full conservation to be kept.
