Restoration of The Hayes Public Conveniences, Cardiff

The Hayes Public Conveniences are Grade II listed structures positioned in the heart of the designated St Mary St Conservation area. They were listed n 1996 as a ‘rare well-preserved example of Victorian public convenience’ but since that time have been subject to some deterioration. Although no charge is made for their use, they are not of a standard that citizens and visitors would expect to see in a city of Cardiff’s standing.
It is proposed to restore the Hayes public conveniences. The proposed works at the Hayes would include: refurbishment of the railings; refurbishment / replacement of the toilets pans / tanks and associated pipework; electrical rewiring; replacement of the safety surfacing on the access / egress steps, and provision of an alarm and CCTV system. It is intended that the leaks through the roof of the toilets will be addressed by the application of an appropriate waterproofing layer when the new public realm is laid as part of the St David’s 2 development.
