Projects / Restoration of Tower Lake Wet Woodlands

Restoration of Tower Lake Wet Woodlands

Tower Lake is a lake extending to approximately 4.5 acres at the southern end of Clandeboye Estate, which lies between Bangor and Newtownards in County Down. Tower Lake is sub-divided by a causeway which carries a public footpath, which is extensively used and especially at weekends. The lake is surrounded by woodland and wet woodland with trees of various ages. Around 80% of the woodland falls within the definition of the Wet Woodland Habitat Action Plan and is partially flooded especially in winter. There are also some mature Beech and Sycamore trees. There is significant invasive scrub species including Rhododrendron, Laurel and many young Sycamore trees.
We want to involve the local community in a series of practical projects to restore the wet woodlands around Tower Lake, with removal of Rhododendron, Laurel and Sycamore, including re-growth treatment and replanting with native trees, principally Alder, Birch and Willow.
