Restoration of wetland at Kirkby on Bain Lincolnshire

The vision of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust is to create the largest area of habitat restored from sand and gravel extraction in the East Midlands. This would involve the restoration of 1,000 hectares of lowland heath, acid grassland, wetland and woodland habitats on a landscape scale on the fen edge sands and gravels to the east of Woodhall Spa.

This first project site lies on the west bank of the River Bain and comprises 8.6ha which has been worked for sand and gravel extraction, known as Riverslea Lake. It will be restored and managed principally as wetland with open water and will complement and extend the adjacent Kirkby Gravel Pits LWT reserve.
