Restoration of wood-pasture habitat at Danemead Nature Reserve

Our project will restore and protect wood-pasture (a UK BAP habitat) at Danemead nature reserve by introducing cattle grazing.

Currently, the wood-pasture is in a poor condition and experiencing significant scrub encroachment, with mature trees at risk of damage due to their size. The site was previously grazed by sheep but this is no longer suitable due to several fatal dog attacks. The wood-pasture will be better maintained by cattle grazing as they create a varied sward and grassland structure, allowing the more delicate herbs and grasses to grow. Previous sheep grazing has been insufficient at effectively maintaining the habitat.

We will install livestock fencing, a cattle corral and provide a water bowser to allow cattle to graze the site. The current fencing is in poor condition and not adequate for cattle. We will also train a group of volunteers to care for the habitat in the long-term.
