Restoring Balls Wood for People and Wildlife

The project focuses on conserving and enhancing an ancient woodland in South Hertfordshire called Balls Wood (a county Wildlife Site situated within the Hertford Heath Landscape Character Area).

The project aims to:
• Improve biodiversity.
• Increase accessibility and improve the visitor experience, allowing more people to visit and enjoy the natural environment.
• Improve people’s knowledge and understanding of wildlife.
• Increase the number of people caring for the woodland.

The project will achieve this through a range of habitat management work, access improvements, installation of infrastructure to improve the visitor experience and community engagement initiatives. Local people will have the opportunity to participate in conservation through volunteer work parties, community volunteering and local events e.g. guided walks and talks.
