Restoring Forgotten Chalk Grassland

This project will enable the restoration and management of chalk grassland sites on the North Downs in the Caterham, Woldingham, and Epsom Downs areas, in north-east Surrey. These parts of the North Downs are often overlooked, but they are equally in need of management and improvement. Restoring these sites would provide an important link in the chain of high quality chalk grassland sites on the North Downs, providing ecological stepping stones between the larger restored areas of chalk grassland of the Mole Gap to Reigate Escarpement SSSI and the Woldingham and Oxted Downs SSSI. We will clear mature scrub, renew fencing to enable grazing to continue and create scrapes to promote the growth of rare chalk grassland species.
