Restoring Freshwater Mussel Rivers in England

The major aim of the project is to protect and increase the number of freshwater pearl mussels in six rivers in the NE, NW and SW of England: Currently there are few remaining adult and juvenile mussels present.
Better protection will be given to the remaining adult mussels and the river environment will be improved to permit the reintroduction and survival of juvenile mussels.
Techniques to improve the environmental quality will be applied to selected river reaches to enhance the reproduction success of pearl mussels through reintroductions and by installing long-term juvenile augmentation trials.
