Restoring Long Clough’s stone wall and biodiversity

We aim to rebuild a dry stone wall at Long Clough Nature Reserve. This wall greatly benefits biodiversity and enhances the countryside. Approximately 120 metres of wall either lie fallen or have missing bits. We will engage a contractor to build the wall. Volunteers will spend a day of preparatory work on site, cleaning out the remnants of the wall ready for the contractor.

Dry stone walls are an integral feature of the Derbyshire countryside and the Peak District. They have an intrinsic ecological value and do enhance the beautiful Derbyshire countryside.

Long Clough’s dry stone wall serves as a refuge for over-wintering toads, newts, lizards and slow worms. The coziness and security of the wall is also attractive to moths, butterflies and other insects. Small birds also use the wall for nesting, esp wheatears, robins, pied wagtails. Certain mosses and plants thrive in the wall dependent on moisture content.
