Restoring the Yorkshire Derwent

This project will control the entry of sediment caused by livestock entering the river in areas subject to riparian erosion. The project is to construct areas for cattle stock watering at six separate locations, allowing the cattle access to the river without disturbing the river bank.A hard standing will be laid using recycled concrete railway sleepers from the river bank down into and below the water. On each side of the hard standing, steel barriers will be fixed to ensure the cattle do not enter the river outside this area.At the Howsham road bridge site, drinking access will be constructed both upstream and downstream of the bridge on the right bank, with fencing erected each side to ensure the cattle are corralled into and out of the hard standing. At each of these locations, erosion of exposed soil in high flows will be reduced by re-seeding, and this will reduce colonisation by invasive non-native plants.
