Resurfacing works on NCN 45 from Swindon to Chiseldon

We are proposing to resurface 1.3 K.M of traffic-free cycle path between Swindon and the village of Chiseldon. The path forms part of National Cycle Route 45 (NCN45). The original route has begun to deteriorate due to a number of factors. In particular, a section of the old railway embankment has experienced slippage due to being situated on a clay hillside, causing cracks to appear in the tarmac worsened by water penetration. In addition, there has been some undermining of the embankment by badgers, causing subsidence. Rainwater run-off at the southern end of the route has begun to undercut the path surface in places. There remains the unsurfaced 250m section which has deteriorated and is now uneven. The original path was built with a 2m width which is below the current minimum of 2.5m for shared-use paths. With these issues in mind, the path was a priority focus of Sustrans’ 2017 supporters appeal.
