Reviving the Ravine – woodland restoration

Located within a densely populated area, the woodland at Carbrook Ravine dates back to medieval times when it formed the boundary of Sheffield Deer Park. A vital green corridor for wildlife and an important breathing space for local residents to get close to nature, it is under threat. Problems of fly-tipping and off-road motorbikes will be addressed by the installation of decorative fencing and community clear-up days. The woodland itself is declining in value for its birds which need a varied woodland structure and composition to provide opportunities for shelter,
feeding and raising young. Also Ash Dieback disease is predicted to kill dozens of trees in Carbrook Ravine in the coming years. We will restore the woodland structure, thinning the dense stands of ash to create glades for other species to generate, managing the woodland ride and edge habitats which are important for bird feeding opportunities and removing encroaching scrub on the wet woodland and heathland boundary.
