Rewetting Winmarleigh – saving Lancashire’s largest raised bog

This project will help restore 75 ha of lowland raised bog habitat at Winmarleigh Moss SSSI, Lancashire. A combination of drainage for peat extraction, and decades of neglect has allowed Winmarleigh moss to dry out, allowing birch trees to invade, which further dry out the moss leading to the loss of raised bog habitat. If left unchecked eventually the whole moss will be lost as it dries out from the edge of the site inwards. This project will reverse this decline through removing invasive scrub, infilling drainage ditches, and the construction of water retaining bunds to help rewet the moss.
