River Ithon: Restoring and creating wet woodlands and floodplain grasslands

A major tributary of the Upper River Wye, the River Ithon catchment drains around a third of the county of Radnorshire. The Ithon and many of its tributaries are scheduled as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Area for Conservation (SAC) Alongside the Ithon are significant blocks of wet woodland – many of which are outside designated areas and so vulnerable – as well as floodplain grasslands. Most of these grasslands have been agriculturally improved and only a few remnants remain at Far hall Meadow, Dolau and at Crabtree Green, Llandrindod. Together these fields represent around 40% of the total Welsh resource of this scarce habitat type. The project aims to work with farmers and landowners to highlight the importance of wet woodland and floodplain grassland in the catchment and to create new areas of wet woodland and floodplain grassland.
