River Tees Rediscovered – Tees Cottage Pumping Station

River Tees Rediscovered is a large scale strategic environmental renewal project working along the length of the river. Built in 1849, Tees Cottage Pumping Station is a Victorian pumping station on the Tees to provide drinking water for Darlington and the surrounding area. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument housing two completely original pumping engines in working order
The pumping station features a gas engine, which is over 100 years old, the largest preserved example in Europe, also driving its original pumps. From 1914 it pumped water from the Tees to settling tanks and then to the town. Gas was originally provided by a Gas Producer Plant, which is still on view.
The group wish support for this specific element of the strategy. The project is environmentally positive and will benefit the local community. It will include improvement to the signage and interpretation around the site, educational resources, improved accessibility on a site of great historic and architectural interest.
