Roots and Wings at Greno Woods

This project aims to improve Greno Woods for birds. Greno is a plantation on an ancient woodland site which is home to 38 species of bird. The project focuses on five of the reserve's rarest of these bird species, all of which are of conservation concern in the UK. This will be done by supporting the different habitats that these birds require. Improving, protecting and increasing the amount of heathland (an increasingly rare habitat) will benefit nightjar. Improving the current oak woodland by controlling invasive species will benefit wood warbler while creating more standing deadwood, from dying ash trees, will benefit woodpeckers. We will plant 5 hectares of new broadleaf woodland and scrub that will benefit tree pipit. The creation of new scrapes will provide feeding habitat for woodcock, these scrapes will be filled with water by diverting rain that falls on the track network; resulting in the added benefit of reducing flood risk and erosion.

Finally it is important that people are able to safely access our sites so that they can connect with nature so we will also improve access and prevent antisocial behaviour such as illegal motorbike access.
