Sacriston Heart of the Village

The Heart of the Village project aims to create a high quality open space at the centre of the village, which will also form a gateway to the new sports and community centre, and a link to the wider network of open spaces beyond the centre.

The scheme has been promoted by the local Partnership group and has been designed to achieve the group’s aims for a village square, including revitalisation of the Memorial Gardens, a public art project to include a clock tower, car parking for the new community centre, and a space for future relocation of the war memorial. The space has been designed to give priority to pedestrian access and informal socalisation.

Integrating green space into the square will be an important contribution to the quality of the urban landscape, in addition to providing a wildlife corridor to the adjacent countryside. Extension of the Memorial garden and new areas of green space will together form 56% of the new square.
