Safeguarding the Future for Lapwing in the Lough Neagh Basin

The project aims to enhance the biodiversity of Portmore Lough reserve, helping to establish the reserve as a centre for lapwing recovery in the Lough Neagh wetlands. Portmore Lough forms part of the Lough Neagh and Lough Beg wetland Special Protection Area (SPA), RAMSAR and ASSI.
This project aims to :
Increase protection for ground nesting birds, such as lapwing and snipe, by installing predator proof fencing around the perimeter of key lapwing breeding areas.
Improve habitat conditions for breeding waders, through cutting meadows for hay, maintaining a short sward in the damp pastures.
Restore fen habitat for invertibrates, passerines and breeding waders. Breeding waders and invertebrates are features of the ASSI designation.
