Salterbeck Wildlife Habitat Creation

There are 3 different but related elements to this project:
Replant the floating islands on the Salterbeck Reser. These provided a valuable habitat for wildlife but for reasons unknown all of the plants on the islands disappeared. The project will ensure that the islands are replanted with native species, using the correct planting media to ensure that the plants establish and remain healthy. The islands will then provide a safe environment for nesting waterfowl as well as providing a habitat fpr aquatic life. An area close to the Reser has been left as a wildflower meadow. The area is very species poor and is dominated by vigorous grasses. The aim of the project is to create a species rich wildflower meadow that will have greater wildlife benefit. The rare Small Blue Butterfly is surveyed and recorded regularly in the area. The landscaped areas around the oval centre are in very poor condition. This has a negative visual impact and is a missed opportunity for improving local biodiversity.
