Saltholme East Restoration Project

This new project will be managed by RSPB who will use cattle/Konik ponies to control invasive rush around the pool edges and create a mosaic of open water, wet pool fringes and diverse vegetation that will support a greater diversity of water birds. To enhance the impact of livestock grazing, there will be an initial cutting of Scirpus rush using a specialist Softrak machine, followed by smaller scale cutting with hand-held reed cutting machinery.A small livestock handling facility will be erected that will be augmented by the mobile cattle handling unit and management will be supported by the sit-in ATV both already purchased for the Dorman`s Pool project. The main priority BAP habitat for the project is not only SPA and SSSI but is also designated as Lowland Fen Marsh and Swamp. The work is essential in order to ensure that the site remains functional habitat for the nationally and internationally important wildlife that it supports.
