Sambo’s Grave Access Improvements, Sunderland Point

The aim of the project is to create a safe and all year round access to the Sambo’s Grave heritage site that is under threat from future coastal erosion. Sambo’s Grave is the resting place of a cabin boy from a slave ship. Sunderland Point and the nearby Port of Lancaster are historically linked with the slave trade. The project will involve repairing and reinstating the existing coastal defence on which a new footpath 100mtrs long will be created .
The new path will include seating and shelter hedge planting. A birdwatching hide is planned as a future phase of the project.
