Projects / Sand Martin Nesting Boxes

Sand Martin Nesting Boxes

This project aims to encourage sand martins which currently visit the Park to nest by the reservoir thus increasing the biodiversity of the Park and its bird population. The aim is to build and install a Sand Martin Box with ten nesting chambers. The expectation is that once installed the Sand Martins which currently visit the Park might be encouraged to stay, though it may well take a couple of years or so before they choose to do so. In the meantime, it is possible that the box may well be used by Kingfishers which currently live by the reservoir.

Once the box is inhabited, it will provide an additional feature and spectacle for those who visit the Park to observe the birds and local wildlife. The box and surrounding area can be easily viewed by those who wish to do so from the public area across the Reservoir whilst being erected in an area to which there is currently no public access which means that the birds and the nesting area itself will remain undisturbed.
