Saving Havant’s Little Terns

The focus of this project is to protect and conserve the critically endangered little tern population in Langstone Harbour, Havant by improving the UK BAP habitat, Coastal Vegetated Shingle on which it depends.

This practical conservation work will protect existing little tern nesting sites, create additional nesting habitat and engage the local community with these beautiful seabirds and their nesting environment.

Shingle beach at several nesting areas (islands and the oyster beds) will be built up to make the terns’ nests less vulnerable to flooding, and existing nesting sites will be protected by the installation of predator fencing, chick shelters and video monitoring.
