Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels (North East Scotland)

The rapid loss of red squirrels throughout much of the UK has been well documented and the main threat to this native species is habitat competition and disease spread from the more robust invasive grey squirrel.

In North East Scotland, the woodland area in and around Aberdeen City is being progressively colonised by grey squirrels from a population which was introduced to city parks. The project aims to halt this spread and protect and expand the red squirrel population through:

– grey squirrel control
– promotion of forest management to benefit red squirrels
– monitoring and surveillance of squirrel populations
– sharing best practice
