Saving Spurns Sparrows!

The project aims to improve nesting conditions, breeding season food supplies wintering habitat for UK BAP tree sparrows. Spurn currently supports 17 breeding pairs of sparrows but the breeding population is limited by the availability of both nesting sites and both summer and winterfeeding areas. This project will create new areas of nesting habitat along with insect rich summer feeding areas that will support young chicks. These habitats include woodland and wetlands. We will also improve food sources for wintering tree sparrows by creating more seed rich areas for adults to feed by planting wild bird crops on site. Finally to ensure a lasting legacy we will improve facilities to gather data that will inform local and national species recovery projects through installing a new and repairing existing Helgoland traps.
