Science and Strategies for the Management and Remediation of Landfills

After a landfill has closed, an operator cannot surrender the site licence until it is shown that the landfill has achieved ‘completion’, i.e. it is unlikely to present a pollution risk to the local environment – which may take many decades, if not centuries. The project aims to develop (1) a beter understanding of the processes involved in flushing pollutants from landfill, (2) techniques for characterising the transport of leachate in landfills at the field scale, and (3) a toolkit of models that can be used to assess the effect of various landfill management techniques on removal of pollutants
