Scottish Mountain Woods at Cairngorm Mountain Garden

To restore area formerly covered by a defunct ski lift infrastructure to highland montane forest area. The objective of the project is to provide a montane forest area on the edge of Cairngorm Mountain so that the general public can access, experience and enjoy the unique and vulnerable montane forest ecosystem, without actually accessing the higher and more vulnerable montane areas. An extensive zone of dwarf trees and low -lying shrubs would once have linked forest and open hillside. This loose patchwork of vegetation supported a diversity of wildlife and gave a more natural appearance to the landscape. This initiative will help to create the conditions necessary for the return of mountain woods. The plight of this important habitat will be brought to the attention of the public and of the people responsible for managing the Scottish countryside. Increased awareness and involvement will lead to increased support for restoration and eventually to action.
