Second Life for Ponds

A research and practical based project to investigate pond restoration techniques at Hampton Nature reserve. The project will use a variety of techniques to restore 10 ponds on Oxford clay type soil and create 2 new ponds, the project will focus on Bearded Stonewort (a Red data book and UK BAP listed aquatic plant) as a key indicator species. Through practical application, and surveys at 3 month intervals following the restoration work, the project will evaluate restoration techniques, measuring impact on Bearded stonewort, water quality and possible side-effects on non-targets flora and fauna.

The project includes staff time to carryout work and supervise contractors, specialist surveys, and machinery hire. Some survey and restoration work will be carried out by volunteers. An expert project ‘board’, including the national lead partner, will oversee the project. The project will address targets for pond restoration/creation and ultimately aims to influence the UKBAP by creating best practice.
