Securing a future for All Saints: urgent roof repairs and the re-instatement of a rainwater disposal system

Many slates on the nave roof are loose or slipped, with water ingress causing interior damage. The lead on the chancel roof has, in part, been replaced with corrugated iron panels, which is inappropriate for the church but necessitated by available funds. Generally, the lead is failing and it is likely that underlying timbers are damaged. Asbestos rainwater goods to the nave and chancel are either damaged or missing and the drainage system requires testing as there is evidence of damp badly affecting ground-level stone work. All these urgent repair needs are highlighted in the church’s latest QI (2014). We propose to carry out drainage and roof timber investigations, recover the nave roof in slates on battens; renew the lead covering on the chancel roof; replace rainwater goods; renew the church’s drainage system; install a roof alarm; and carry out re-plastering and decoration internally.
