Projects / Shade Recreation Ground

Shade Recreation Ground

The small settlement of Shade is on the outskirts of the market town, Todmorden, in Upper Calder Valley (all geographically-isolated, key regeneration areas). Shade Recreation Ground is central to the area’s social history. Created by a local social reformer of national renown, it is a large former mill dam – drained, filled, covered – which remained unimproved for 100 years. The bare tarmac expanse and steep bank had no amenity value, but now has a new playground (see 756094.147). There is a continuing need, supported by 60 families, to improve the wider ‘Rec’ to reflect modern design, health, sustainability and natural environment agendas. Planting beds plus an off-road path providing new access will be constructed.
