Shamrock Play Area Upgrade, Churchdown Parish Council, Glos

This a project to refurbish the Shamrock Play Area on the Coriander Estate, Churchdown, Glos.

The play area refurbishment will replace the ageing small climbing frame, now at end of life, with a modern inclusive and engaging play area for children and young people of all ages. The redesigned right-hand corner of the park will feature a new climbing frame, spinner, rockers and a zip wire across the top bank. The existing bench will be relocated to improve seating near the younger children’s area. This project will provide a safe, accessible and stimulating environment, encouraging active play, social interaction and community cohesion for families across Churchdown, but especially the Coriander Estate.

The play area refurbishment will directly benefit a community characterised by a high level of social housing and close-knit families. In the GL3 1LD/1LW area around 87% of homes are socially rented. Coriander Estate has 26% of children and young people aged 0-17 years, higher than the county average. This youthful demographic, combined with Coriander Estate’s family focused community, demonstrates a strong need for safe, inclusive and engaging outdoor facilities. The residents approached the council about the lack of facilities in the park. The council then undertook a community engagement day at the park to find out what the children and families wanted. This project will promote physical activity, imaginative play and social connection with a focal point for the community, enhancing local pride and improving wellbeing for residents of all ages.
