Sheffield Living Waters – Creating and Connecting Great Crested Newt Habitats

This project aims to use existing data on Great crested newt distribution in Sheffield area in order to strengthen several local populations and improve connectivity at both local and landscape level. Extensive habitat work will focus on increasing the number and restoring ponds in sites with GCN records. This will hopefully result in enlarging population size at each site, better spatial coverage and more possibilities for dispersal between sites. In addition, this project will include surveys to actualise the distribution and to allow evaluations of project success in future years plus training park rangers and volunteers in habitat management and survey techniques. This project would represent a crucial step forward for the conservation of the GCN in this region.
