Shewalton Sandpits – Habitat Creation Project

This project will focus upon the enhancement of Shewalton Sandpits Wildlife Reserve in order to reinstate areas of open water and sandy ground which were lost following cessation of adjacent sand and gravel works (which cut off the sites water supply).

The project will restore a source of water to the site, excavate new ponds and bare sandy bank features. The water supply will be sourced – via a holding pond – from surface run-off from an adjacent landfill site.

This habitat restoration will be important for a range of invertebrate and plant species.
